On Thursday, I attended a deaf hip-hop concert given by Signmark, a deaf rapper. My sister, friends, and I also danced while at the concert to his music. It was a great deal of fun for us. Signmark is a high-energy performer and is very active by using ASL to communicate the lyrics. He is from Finland, uses BSL for communicating usually but not for his songs. He had a guy as his "VOICE" who does the vocal lyrics, but Signmark writes the lyrics and composes the beats himself. He signed the songs while his VOICE spoke. The crowd itself was half hearing and half deaf. It was so amazingly loud. I felt the music more than ever! I was surprised at the huge crowd who showed up and that it was such a success!
One thing, you may wonder is how deaf people enjoy a concert they can’t hear. First of all, the speakers were so powerful and very, very loud. We could all feel the vibrations from the beats, especially the bass! We all held balloons to make it easier for us to feel the music. I highly recommend giving it a try! I loved the way it felt when it gave me chills in my body! I enjoyed the concert very much. It was my first concert that had a deaf singer! I have gone to several concerts in my life and only could feel the vibrations, which was not as exciting for me. With hearing singers I found it harder to understand the lyrics. I am so glad that there are deaf song signers growing and growing in the deaf community! I’ve included a video I took of his songs at the concert below. I thought it was a great event and a great experience. I hope to go to more events like this in the near future!
