Can you remember a book you loved to read or have others read to you as a child? I always enjoyed a book called, “I can’t always hear you.” I don’t remember how old I was when I got it but I was so excited to have a book about a Deaf child. I believe I was excited because it was a book I read that related to my deaf cousins. Ever since I was really little I enjoyed learning signs and about the technology of the Deaf when my cousin Ann aka Deaf Socialite would teach me. She and other two Deaf cousins, Stephanie and Ralph really sparked this passion to learn more and more about the Deaf community.
If you look at this book now it looks like it is about to fall apart…lol! Looking over this book I wonder how many other children got a book that somehow involved a deaf or hard of hearing character. It makes me wonder how our society would be if in school there was a requirement to read at least one book about the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Would things be different?
The first thing this book asks is , "What does it feel like to be different?" It makes me think that maybe kids need to be shown books like this that show that there are many different kind of people out there. We should push for people to learn more about deafness, audism, down syndrome, and more. We all know that kids can be very cruel to anyone that is different out there. I would love to know everyones opinion if you feel our society could change for the better if we started having kids read more books about how different we all are.
I would also like to know if the only children out there with books like these are deaf/hard of hearing or have deaf in the family? This topic came to my mind because I was thinking about how totally clueless many people are about the Deaf community. Not only that but there are people that are very insensitive about the Deaf community even though they have little to no knowledge about the community. Many of those people have no desire to learn about the language or community. I am wonder what if we all introduce more education about the deaf community to kids at a younger age? Do you feel this would make a difference?
There are more and more books coming available to us that have great deaf characters. How can we get those books into the school systems and into the homes of people all over the world?
I would love to hear the ideas you all may have! It would also be great if you could share some titles of books you have read that have Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing characters in it that would be perfect for children of all ages to read. Please leave a comment below. Thanks!
