The sign for bath from the daughter of TinyTalk Warrington
Hello I am Heather a baby signing teacher using BSL signs in the UK.
The bed time routine, oh what a joy and what fun it can be also, it can make your life run smoother and also your baby will have a sense of knowing what is coming next.
Also many mums are just too busy to remember to use the signing through out the day, its better we do remember but many don't and if we can remember during the bed time routine then that would be fantastic.
I have already done a post on reading with your baby or child and will have some more to come, I will love it if mums of my class will let me film whilst reading Charlie Chick but yes the book is a great sign for the bed time routine and also reading everyday with your baby will give your baby a great start.
So lets start with the Bath, now the bath has a wealth of signing fun and you may not bath your child every day or perhaps not at night but if you do you may have toy ducks or boats etc so you see the fun you can have with signing. Then talking all the time as you change clothes etc . You will then brush the babies gums or teeth and use the sign by touching your teeth so you get your child to know it is part of the hygiene of being human to brush their teeth every evening and also the morning. A great sign as you talk is "I Love you" simply point to your self, put both hands on your chest, then point to baby, easy and you can really feel the love. If your child has a teddy this can be added to the signing also. So you can see how easy it is to sign as you use a routine with your children, this is great for language development for pre verbal children but also it is great for older children too.
Seth Signing Book
Here is Seth Son of another TinyTalk teacher signing book, books are great at bed time to relax your little on and it is never to late to start reading with your baby. Also books have many pictures in for children and we can use our signing skills here also.
So you see even if through out the day you forget your signing please do try and use in the bed time routine, it is a win win situation as you will have your little one in a routine of sorts, you will be using your signing skills and also you will form a great bond. Another positive is that you want the bedtime routine to be relaxed and also fun and it can sometimes be a stressful time especially if you want to have that bit of time to your self, but if you take a little time here you will be doing something amazing with your little one.
I am eager to hear of what others do in their bed time routine with their children.
My youngest is now coming up to five years, I have tried adding in the memory game which he enjoys and also just recently a flash card games that has lots of signs as I am eager to get my son to read, he enjoys the special time with mum and his sister joins in to help also.
In our classes with TinyTalk we have a lesson plan all about the bed time routine, we have songs such "teddy bear teddy bear turn around" and many more that links with the core signs being learned to make life easy and also the core signs that are important for a baby.
I would love to know what you do and how you can add this to what you already do, in fact adding signing to what you already do is not difficult at all, signing can be added to songs you sing in the day, stories you read and also parts of the day, it does not require to much effort or affect what you already do.
I wish you every success and before i go would like to share a little story I heard today from one of the mums in my class. The mummy told me that her child's grand parents were very skeptical about her using signs with her child but she carried on regardless, now her son is signing please and thank you all the time and now the grand parents are amazed as this little boy just turned one year of age is showing really good manners. Remember to talk as you sign to babies as this will help with speech also or with lipreading even.
Thank you for reading heather TinyTalk Leicester.
