Hello I am Heather and I teach baby signing in Leicester with TinyTalk and I see a lot of parents. Now one thing I notice is that when someone stops coming to the classes I ask how the signing is coming along at home. Some parents will go on to tell me all these exciting stories about their little one and signing, some families will not use the signing at home as they come for the social aspect but they get a surprise when their child starts using a sign they learned in the session. Any way what I did find is that some families would start forgetting to use the signs at home and then it is such a shame.
To conquer this I suggest going back to basics by choosing just a few signs and concentrate on these so in the begining they would include 'mum' 'dad' 'milk' 'nappy' etc but later on they might include a favourite toy, book, or a family pet it is really important to follow your child's lead see what he or she is interested in.
Another way is to choose one time of day to really go for it with your lovely signing skills, and use the signing whether that be meal times so you will use food, more, all gone, enough, sit, wait, etc or bath time which would include clean, sit, bath, teeth, duck (toy) etc etc
You may wish to have some free play or book time to include the signing time and remember it does not involve a lot extra it is simply adding the use of signing during a special time in the day and making that little effort to remember to use them and before you know it you will be back into the swing of things.
I would love to know how people get on with this.
You can add signs to all those nursery rhymes and action songs as well as the books you read to your child.
I wish you all lots of luck.
I am a mother of 4, teach baby signing and also BSL level 2 qualified, love TKD and much more.
