Hello I am Heather and have been teaching baby signing for 5 years now well my son is 5 and a half so longer really but will celebrate the 5 years officially in September when I did the first class with my then 1 year old daunting.
So you see my son stopped signing the rascal when he was 18 months old because he wanted to talk I could understand his wants and needs via his speech which is good but I also wanted him to keep up with the signing, he did though start again for the fun of it which was really nice, Mr Tumble may have helped too tee hee.
Any way I found by having fun signing along practising for my BSL helped too and inspired me to encourage my child, Going on holiday helped also as would see things we dont usually see and get photos of signing penguin etc and so the signing fun comes to life, in fact I must take the children to the Zoo and would get some great pics.
I will get those pictures at the Zoo this year I will be sure to do that so I will.
Also signing to learn as well, we can learn some simple words with reading and incorporate signing as well, make the flash cards big with nice big writing and two of each word, then play the memory game, you can have a picture first such as duck, cat etc use those for the game help with the signing also and give lots of praise. It all makes signing lots of fun.
Which signing to use is up to you, I would sign with your countries version so if you live in America it would be good to use ASL, I use BSL I live in the UK though would love to learn some ASL also and already know the sign for milk tee hee as that is easier than the BSL version and we use that sign for babies milk.
So use the signing when out and about with your children it will really help the learning, dont worry if they loose interest as they may well soon pick it up, we have a show in the UK called Something Special that most toddlers enjoy, it is based on BSL but is Makaton but this is very similar to how we do baby signing any way and the signs are very similar, when I say it is the same I mean with we say the word as we sign, we use English grammar and we only sign one or two signs in a sentence such as cow, cat, milk etc not the words would you like etc etc.
Until next time my lovelies I am waiting to see if I am aired on the TV signing and singing the Eye Of the Tiger although my singing is usually good when I sing Nursery rhymes and action songs, it was not that brillant when I sang The Eye Of The Tiger. Never mind but I am hoping to film my self and show you this with subtitles just dont listen to me sing tee hee.
I am a mother of 4, teach baby signing and also BSL level 2 qualified, love TKD and much more.
