Hello everyone and a belated Happy New Year, my word I really relaxed over the winter break it was lovely, I had a lovely chance to re charge my drained out batteries and this past week has been very busy indeed.
I suddenly realised that my baby signing sessions would be starting again and even though I had the throws all nice and clean I hadn't prepared for the sessions at all. A start to a new term so I need welcome booklets, enrollment forms and also I need people to remember the classes are starting again.
I then spent a good deal of time going through my email for the past couple of terms of inquiries and letting each and every one know, I do have a database but that will be updated this week and keeping that up to date will make life easier,
Also with running baby signing classes we have to prepare for the teaching the delivering of the session and have visual props at the ready that are relevant to that session so there is a lot of planning to do. So here I am on the laptop printing of lesson plans and hand outs as well as welcome booklets and the forms, I have leaflets already and luckily I have photo cards all laminated from previous term for the Toddler classes phew as my first year of teaching the toddler classes I spent a lot of time printing and laminating and making things for the classes but that all done now.
Then I think the refreshments for the mums and dads and grandparents and child minders, so I look in my create re wash all the cups and refill coffee, tea,de caffeinated coffee and tea, sugar and had to buy some cordial squash which can be easily diluted with water and I had to buy the biscuits. Then on the morning add the milk before I go.
Thats just at the start of the term, running a baby signing class also involves knowing the 150 signs in the TinyTalk curriculum, know all the songs that we sing ( I used to listen to the cd all of the time), marketing the business, now that takes a lot out of one and if you dont market your business how will people come? Word of mouth is though the best form of marketing but even then you need someone to come so they can give the word of mouth.
Arriving at the venue is then another hurdle as every thing needs to be taken from the boot of the car to the room such as throws to cover the ground, toys for social time for toddlers, toys for the babies, instruments, refreshment crate and urn or kettle, props, display board, administration bag with leaflets and paperwork inside, phone, keys, etc etc then I remember I forgot to bring change and low and behold I needed that.
So everything is in the room then the room needs to turn into a session, water put in the urn, tables moved out of the way, chairs collected and put around the room, the throws down covering the floor (some teachers use foam mats also), display table organised with baby signing information on there as well as the forms, leaflets, signing sheets in a folder for the parents to look at and they can purchase a signing pack if they would wish to, CD's etc. The lesson plans need to be at hand and the props etc.
All done its time then to welcome the mums and children to class and be there for them which I love.
The first week went well this week, some new mums as well as families that have been coming for years, my toddler classes I truly feel are my family as most have been coming since their child was a baby and now they are toddlers learning the toddler talking curriculum which I will touch on one week soon as it is lovely.
What I love about the first week is that the families go away learning those six starter signs in the baby signing class, they go home and use 'milk' mostly and 'all gone'.
This week I will teach the family signs and really looking forward to it. Its hard to prepare for classes some times but I love what I do and the reward is seeing happy families learning to communicate with their babies.
If you think you could start TinyTalk classes you can go to the TinyTalk website and you will find how you too can become a teacher.
Until next time
lots of love sent your way
