Hello there, I am Heather and I teach baby signing in Leicester although I really enjoyed signing and singing to eye of the Tiger earlier this week but not all of the song. Enough of that, lets talk about communicating with our young ones our small children. When there is a event or even yearly ones it is good to talk about it with them, for instance most children that celebrate Halloween will know to dress up from previous years. We had Halloween just last week and tomorrow we in the UK celebrate Guy Forkes night often called bonfire night and so it is good to explain to the children the reason behind it as well as having fun.
With babies very young ones you will be amazed at what they will remember in their subconscious brain and if they are young but not quite talking and you sign all over the Christmas period you may get some signs out of them and this is a challenge to you all now.
So lets learn some Christmas signs to use over the period, if you do not celebrate Christmas then adopt it to suit you and what you do celebrate, I know Eid has gone and Diwali is very close, for Eid we would use the sign 'family' 'neighbours' 'prayer' perhaps, for Diwali we can use 'fireworks' 'lights' 'family' and those words and signs that really make the days special, 'clothes' as we wear nice clothes on Eid day.
I was bought up with Christmas and live in a Christian Country and celebrated even after I changed my religion and now feel I can not take it from my children why I am telling you I do not know tee hee.
SO Christmas signs can be lights that flicker and in BSL we have our light sign but not over the head as a normal light but facing out and many times to sign it for the flicker, more signs will include 'Christmas Tree' 'present' Santa' 'reindear' oh reindeer is a favorite sign of mine can you remember putting your hands to the side of your head with your thumbs touching ears and sticking out your tongue? well in BSL reindeer is similar, don't stick out your tongue though but instead then move your hands up and out to represent the antlers.
The main thing is every time you see pretty lights sign lights, decorate the tree sign Christmas tree etc and by the end of the season the little one may be able to do a sign or two but also it will help him or her remember the occasion and build on the memories.
Another thing to do is sing some songs as well, you sign just some sore words and I have a video I made last year and so I have not edited it to add captions which I really want to learn to do by the way if you can teach me I would be most grateful. Anyways I sing When Santa Got Stuck Up the Chimney, the first time for baby signing as just sign some main key words but the 2nd time I sign more not all the words as I was not that good though you should see the eye of the tiger I did last Monday, sorry again tee hee. Ok here is the clip
If you are hearing I do appoligise for the laughing I think I got into the Christmas spirit just a tad and when watching annoyed my self with it. The little bot who helped me with the filming is my son Azad, through out the blog you will have seen many pictures of him and he is now 5 amazing they do grow fast. I will this year go over the signs with him again as we go through phases so its do as I say not as I do, although saying that I am going through the alphabet with him with sounds and the sign of the phonic sound and I believe that will help him with reading.
It is so important though to talk to your children if you are able and also use some key signs, when walking in the park we see birds and perhaps ducks on the pond, every spring we can talk about new life and add in the signing where appropriate, my son is looking forward to spring because he wants to see the frog spawn again.
Back to Christmas though as it is November as I type, if you have songs you love you can sing those, add in a few signs make it fun enjoy your self and your family. I hope you have enjoyed reading this and I hope you enjoyed the clip.
