Today I am going over how to help yourself or help others start to sign with their very young babies, now it is important to start with just a few basic signs such as milk, nappy, mummy etc that are useful for a baby's life, they will need repeating over and over and with hearing babies we talk as we sign as well, this will also help a Deaf baby learn to lip read. A baby can show recognition of a sign from as young as 4 months with the show of excitement, just imagine when they actually recognise the sign? for a baby to sig back they usually are a minimum of 6 months old although many claim their baby has signed prior to this. Most will sign around 8 months old but even then first words come much later and even then we are sometimes unable to understand what is being said so the attempts of signing really help.
At the age of one children really want to communicate a lot more and this is when all the signs they have learned in their first year start to materialise. So keep it up, start with just a few and then when your baby gets very excited with the sign for milk or more then start to add some more signs.
I would love to show you some basic signs to get you started and will do that for next week.
in TinyTalk we have what we call 50 core signs that are really important to a baby's life which will help communicate with your child and also with eating time, going to bed etc which will really come in handy. We also have another 100 signs in the curriculum that are also useful and many of our babies master all of them and go on to the toddler classes which go on to learn all about themselves and so much more.
So yes start with just a few signs, talk as you sign, when your baby shows recognition of a sign for example get really excitement when signing milk, add some more signs, make it fun, relax, and enjoy what you are doing with your baby, what is better than the gift of communication.
You can sign anywhere, any one can sign with your baby, you can use the signs within nursery rhymes and when reading books. There are no limitations.
I am a mother of 4, teach baby signing and also BSL level 2 qualified, love TKD and much more.
