I am back at work. Actually if you think about it I haven’t been out that long. I lost my hearing in April 2012 but managed to pick up lipreading for three months until the pain in my ears became unbearable and I had to leave work on disability in June 2012 for five months. I was really busy the five months I was out. Some people think that when you are out on disability you stay around the house and watch Netflix and sleep, but it was just the opposite for me. I had few days where I stayed home and rested. I had 10 days in the hospital, multiple trips to doctors, and three surgeries. When we determined that I would not need cochlear implants but would instead try hearing aids, II had to find the right ones and test them out in different environments before going back to work. So you can see I was busy the five months I was out and I didn’t even mention the family duties I had at home since I was off work.
There is a feeling of accomplishment “toiling the land”. I like my job. There are stressful moments and as in most companies there are expectations and deadlines to meet, but when I take a step back I feel gratitude. It feels good to know I have helped a student accomplish one of his or her life goals. There are some students who start out with very little hope but with my help find the hope and courage to complete school.
Do you find satisfaction in things you do throughout the week? Do you have a boss like the ladies do in the movie “9 to 5”? If so, what can you do today to make your life happier for yourself and others?
I leave you with the Dolly Parton music clip - come on now turn up those hearing aids and let’s sing together:
